It’s not every day that you stumble upon perfect decor on your regional thrift store. Once in while, however, it happens — and at times it happens in bulk. I had been shopping in a run-down thrift store, really not anticipating any fantastic finds, when I stumbled upon a beautiful new Thomas O’Brien tumbler. I flipped it over and saw the cost : 50 cents. I had been sold.

I looked on another shelf, and guess what? Two more of the specific same, brand-new tumblers. I’d stumbled upon a Target overstock, and I was happy as a lark! For your newest couple of minutes, I rummaged atop the shelves, pulling out tumbler after tumbler until I had a pair of 13 (12 for visitors and you to make it a group of strange numbers).

Overall, I invested $6.50 and went home a happy thrifter.

Once I unpacked the tumblers and cleaned up them a little, I wanted to provide them an upgrade for fall. A single, simple leaf seemed to be the specific touch they desired.

I decided to use a mixture of metallic gold and hematite glass paints to provide the tumblers individuality in each piece and a little depth of colour.

The Process

Attach the silkscreen into the tumbler. The silkscreens I used have a mild adhesive backing and are fully flexible, which makes the work a lot simpler. Guarantee that the silkscreen is fully stuck in the top to bottom to avoid errors in the final product.

Split a little sponge with only a small amount of paint. Too much paint with slop through the silkscreen and create a mess.

Amy Renea

Gently daub the paint onto the silkscreen, covering the whole surface. Wipe the sponge in the top to bottom to create a smooth end.

Immediately and softly life the silkscreen to remove it.

Should you wait too long, then the paint will dry, and little pieces of the silkscreen will stick to the tumbler.

Amy Renea

Should you accidentally go beyond the borders of the silkscreen whilst painting, it is no big thing.

Amy Renea

Simply wipe the excess off with your finger when it is still wet.

After the paint dries completely, the end will become duller and also a little more subdued. Complete the process by allowing the piece to air cure for several days before using the tumblers.

After the paint sets, the tumblers are washable, but they could still be damaged. I went ahead and washed them in the dishwasher, but hand wash to be safe.

Thus from thrift store score to cool home decor, these tumblers are just one of a kind.
