If you’re tired of your vinyl furniture, a little paint will go a very long way to providing them a well overdue makeover that will impress all of your visitors. Most people have trouble painting over vinyl because they paint it as though it’s drywall or wood. Vinyl is a plastic and have to be treated as such, therefore ordinary latex paints and primers do not do the job. By prepping furniture with products developed to operate with plastic materials such as vinyl, you can make certain your furniture will look as good as new.

Disassemble the furniture as necessary with a screwdriver, eliminating drawers, doors and hardware, to create sanding and painting much easier. Set them on a tarp to reduce damage to other surfaces in your house during sanding and painting.

Sand the furniture pieces with 220 grit to make a slightly textured surface for primer and paint to abide by. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth.

Apply a spray primer created for plastics. Apply in strokes, staying at least 12 inches from the surface. Let the primer dry for at least an hour; if you can, let it dry overnight.

Apply a latex paint or a paint designed to adhere to plastics, using a nylon brush in long, even strokes throughout the surface. Maintain the coat thin and also across the entire surface. Allow the initial thin coat to dry before applying another coat. Let it dry overnight.

Apply a wipe-on polyurethane varnish using a clean cotton rag to protect the paint. Follow the application instructions of the particular varnish; instructions differ from brand to brandnew. Following the varnish dries for the period recommended by the tag, reconstruct the furniture and replace the drawers, drawers and hardware.
